Singing Wings by Kurdish filmmaker Hemen Khaledi won the Charles E. Guggenheim Emerging Artist Award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival 2026, marking a significant debut and highlighting a poetic portrayal of migration and rural Kurdish life.

Singing Wings, the debut feature documentary by Kurdish filmmaker Hemen Khaledi, has been awarded the Charles E. Guggenheim Emerging Artist Award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival 2026. This distinction is one of the festival’s most significant honors, recognizing an outstanding first-time documentary director and highlighting exceptional emerging voices in global nonfiction cinema.

Held annually in Durham, North Carolina, Full Frame is widely regarded as one of the leading international festivals dedicated exclusively to documentary film. As an Oscar-qualifying event, it serves as a major platform for introducing new filmmakers to the international stage and for recognizing works of both artistic and cultural importance.

In Singing Wings, Khaledi presents a nuanced and intimate portrayal of life in rural Kurdistan through the story of a 78-year-old woman who rescues and cares for an injured stork while tending to her ailing husband. At the same time, her daughter prepares to leave the village, reflecting broader patterns of migration. The film constructs a subtle yet powerful parallel between the migratory journey of the bird and the human experience of departure, displacement, and attachment to place.

Prior to its recognition at Full Frame, Singing Wings had already established a strong presence on the international festival circuit, earning critical acclaim and awards at major events, including the Busan International Film Festival, as well as screenings at prominent European festivals. With this debut, Khaledi emerges as a distinctive Kurdish voice in contemporary documentary filmmaking.

Rather than engaging with dominant narratives that often frame Kurdish identity through conflict, Singing Wings focuses on everyday life, offering a restrained and poetic exploration of care, resilience, and intergenerational change. The film provides a perspective that is both deeply rooted in Kurdish experience and universally resonant.

The awarding of the Charles E. Guggenheim Emerging Artist Award to Singing Wings affirms the film’s artistic strength while marking the emergence of an important new Kurdish filmmaker on the global stage.
